TACOMA – The Sedro-Woolley Cubs girls wrestling team claim their fourth state team title with 77 team points over second place Fife (70) and one individual state title from 3A defending state champion Jessie Kaech at 130. Kaech earned her second state title with two pins on Day One and two pins to finish out her season on Day Two. Haylee Rabenstein finished up with a second place showing at 155 as Jordyn Adams placed fourth at 118 for the Cubs and Emily Iverson took sixth at 106 to help Sedro-Woolley to the 3A girls team title.

On the boys’ side, Brady Mast collected a pin in the semifinals and a 10-2 decision to win the only boys individual championship for the Cubs at 145. Kevin Rabenstein made the podium with a fourth place finish at 285 while freshman Jacob Farrell (132) and Kyle Morgan (138) both took sixth place, helping the Cubs take sixth place in the team standings.

Enumclaw won the state team title with 120 points, followed by Yelm (98), Bonney Lake (81), Shadle Park (69) and Kelso (66.5) were the top five schools in the Boys 3A standings.

TACOMA – Day One at this year’s Mat Classic saw four Cub boys grapple into the semifinals and two Cub girls reach the same level. Sedro-Woolley’s freshman phenom Jacob Farrell tore through his first two opponent’s, first with a pin, then a 6-4 decision over last year’s runner-up at 132, Izaec Quintanilla of North Central. Farrell joins Kyle Morgan (138), Brady Mast (145) and Kevin Rabenstein (285) into the semifinals on the boys’ side. Cub girls have Jessie Kaech (130) and Haylee Rabenstein (155) in the semifinals as well. Kaech is ranked #1 at 130.

Teams points show the Sedro-Woolley girls in the lead with 77 points with Stanwood next at 61.5 points followed by Kelso (53), Fife (52) and Centralia ( 50).

MILL CREEK – The Sedro-Woolley Cubs’ girls wrestling team were at full strength for the first time in several weeks as they won the Lady Wolfpack tournament at Henry M. Jackson High School in Mill Creek last Saturday. A number of Cub wrestlers were back in action after being held back to keep within the WIAA rule of only 30 matches per regular season, which had led to head coach Barb Morgan having to keep various Cub wrestlers from competing in conference duals. Jessie Kaech (130) and Kaylee Rabenstein (155) won championships for the Cubs. Sedro-Woolley scored 153 team points, outpacing Mount Baker (144), Federal Way (130), Stanwood (122) and Elma (100). Mount Vernon placed seventh with 68 points and Burlington-Edison placed 14th with 33 points.

100: No Cub wrestlers; 106: Emily Iverson (3-3, 2 pins, 5th place); 112: Cassidy Mast (3-1, 3 pins, 3rd); 118: Jordyn Adams (3-1, 2 pins, 2nd); 124: Cherish Mauck (2-1, 2 pins, 5th); 130: Jessie Kaech (4-0, 4 pins, 1st); 137: Taylor Dawson (3-2, 2 pins, 5th); 145: Kendall Stafford (2-2, 2 pins, 5th); 155: Haylee Rabenstein (4-0, 4 pins, 1st); 195: Mariah Gulick (2-2, 4th).

1/25/12

SEDRO-WOOLLEY – The Cubs might have been still suffering from not being able to wrestle during the week of snow, where the team lost practice due to four days of canceled classes (teams cannot practice if school is out of session). They might have suffered from the WIAA imposed rule of limiting wrestlers to only 30 matches prior to post-season tournaments. Either way you look at it, the Cubs lost to Mount Baker 43-27 Wednesday night as they hosted the Mountaineers at Sedro-Woolley High School.

Boys’ results

106: Bute pinned Ledet (MB) 5:31; 113: Monaghan (MB) pinned Swanburg :53; 120: Buck Johnson tech fall Laranaga (MB) 16-1; 126: Walton (MB) dec. Robbins 12-4; 132: Bezugly (MB) pinned Ja.
1/25/12

MOUNT VERNON – Both the Cubs’ boys and girls wrestling teams lost to the Mount Vernon Bulldogs – the Cub boys 41-16, the girls 30-30 tie with the tie-breaker going the Bulldogs’ way – Monday night in front of a raucous, capacity crowd in the Bulldogs’ gym.

Cub head coach Jay Breckenridge started wrestlers who normally compete on the junior varsity squad, but had won challenges in practice for the honor to wrestler varsity matches and also switched a handful of wrestlers around to different weight classifications to provide some with experience wrestling bigger opponents. That strategy met with Mount Vernon’s high-ranking 3A talent in certain weights which resulted in a Bulldog home victory.

In the girls’ opening event, “Forfeit Fest” kept some of the state’s best girls wrestlers from action. Instead, the fans were left with five matches, all won by pins – three by Sedro-Woolley, two by Mount Vernon. Due to the number of forfeits – nine in all – the total point tally and tie-breaker scenario leaned in favor of Mount Vernon after the 30-30 tie.

MV 41, SW 16

1/20/12

3A Rankings are out with five Cub wrestlers listed among the best in the state: Boyce Johnson is #4 at 132, Kyle Morgan is #3 at 138, Brady Mast is #3 at 145 and Kevin Rabenstein is #5 at 285. On the girls’ side, Cassidy Mast is #5 at 112, Cherish Mauck is #10 at 130, Jessie Kaech is #2 at 137 and Kendall Stafford is #7 at 137 and Haylee Rabenstein is #2 at 145.

1/13/12

BELLINGHAM – The Cubs’ boys wrestling team competed in the Northwest Conference wrestling tournament at Sehome High School beginning Saturday morning at 9 a.m. with more of the junior varsity than the varsity wrestlers. Head coach Jay Breckenridge is holding off most starters and ranked wrestlers for Districts and Regionals. Sedro-Woolley placed fifth at the conference tournament, mostly with the younger, more inexperienced wrestlers.

The lone Cub wrestler to compete in the finals was Kyle Morgan at 145 who, coming off some lost time from the flu, lost a 15-6 decision to Blaine’s Shaypher Hendricks.

Team scores: 1. Mount Baker 232; 2. Mount Vernon 200.5; 3. Blaine 181; 4. Burlington-Edison 135.5; 5. Sedro-Woolley 134; 6. Ferndale 128; 7. Bellingham 117.5; 8. Nooksack Valley 106; 9. Sehome 81; 10. Lynden 73; 11. Meridian 68; 12. Squalicum 56.5; 13. Anacortes 12.5.

1/8/12

CUB GIRLS WIN WOOLLEY WOMEN TOURNEY

SEDRO-WOOLLEY – The Cubs’ top-ranked girls wrestling team outdistanced their Skagit County rival Burlington-Edison Tigers in their own Woolley Women’s Wrestling Tournament at Sedro-Woolley High School Saturday by a score of 225 to the Tiger’s 193.

Jessie Kaech, the state’s top wrestler at 137, blazed through the competition on her way to her third tournament title this season, while Taylor Dawson took the championship at 145 and Haylee Rabenstein, who opted to work up a few weight classes at 170 also took top honors for the Cubs.

Sedro-Woolley also saw 11 other wrestlers place in their own tournament: Cassidy Mast (2nd 112), Emily Iversen (3rd 112); Jordyn Adams (3rd 118), Hailey Parker (4th 118); Tinerra Adams (6th 124); Kirsten Jewell (3rd 130), Emilie Moser (5th 130); Kayla Hemmingson (4th 145), Abby Vance (6th 145); Kaylee Naylor (6th 170); Logan Riggles (4th 195).

CUBS 64, Anacortes 16

ANACORTES – The Cubs’ boys team handled the Anacortes Seahawks 64-16, though the squad had been affected by the cold and flu season, as head coach Jay Breckenridge enjoyed wins from junior varsity wrestlers who stepped up for varsity action Wednesday night in Anacortes. Six pins were recorded in addition to three forfeit wins for the Cubs at 106, 113 and 285. Buck Johnson (120), Robbins (126), Jacob Farrell (138), Farmer (152), Josh Farrell (170) and Mohr (220) won by fall for the Cubs.
